Chappelle’s Show – Season 2 $9.96 Dave Chappelle’s shrewd parodies, stinging satires, and boldly imaginative fantasias simply pour from the second season of his Comedy Central show, in every respect as funny as his well-received debut year. The structure is the same: a relaxed Chappelle introduces each sketch to an enthusiastic, studio audience (some of these introductions amount to stand-up routines), and then the madness begins…. |

Not illustrated. Excerpt: Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius (ca 130 BC or 127 BC 63 BC) was a pro-Sullan state figure. He was named Pius because of his 99 BC petition to return his father from exile and made justice to his cognomen for the constance, frontality and inflexibility with which he always fought for his father’s rehabilitation and return to Rome. He was elected Quaestor in 97 BC, Tribune in 92 and Pontifex Maximus in 81, a Praetor in 89 BC, Consul in 80. He withdrew from Rome during the civil fights between Marius and Sulla, returning afterwards with the latter. As a military figure, he had his first commands in the war in 109-107 BC, when he accompanied his father Quintus Caecilius Metellus Numidicus in Numidia during Jugurthine War, where his father took him as a simple cadet. He was later revealed to be one of the best subordinates of Sulla, but without any other objective than the one of fighting the demagogy with which Marius threatened Rome, never participating in the atrocious violence that marked such a troubled phase of the History of Rome. He was also one of the Roman commanders in the Social War of 90 – 89 BC. A Propraetor at that time, Pius stormed Venusia and killed the general of the Marsi, Quintus Poppaedius Silo. In 87 BC Pius by the order of Senate tried to make peace with the Samnites. Made a Consul in 80 BC, he was then sent to Spain to combat Quintus Sertorius, where Sertorius and Marcus Perpenna Vento faced the Roman power, establishing his bases in Metellinum (today Medellín) Castra Caecilia (today Cáceres), Viccus Caecilius, at the Sierra de Gredos, and at Caeciliana, near Setúbal. During eight years of resistance he was unable to conclusively defeat Sertorius, and it was only after Sertorius’ assassination by his own … More: |

Not illustrated. Excerpt: Attila is an opera in a prologue and three acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Temistocle Solera, based on the play Attila, König der Hunnen (“Attila, King of the Huns”) by Friedrich Ludwig Zacharias Werner. Initially, Verdi had enlisted Francesco Maria Piave to prepare the libretto, after Verdi’s own scenario. After finding Piave’s work unsatisfactory, Verdi then turned to Solera, but finally returned to Piave for Act III. The opera received its first performance at La Fenice, Venice, on 17 March 1846. Ezio’s aria of heroic resolution “E gettata la mia sorte” is a fine example of a characteristic Verdian genre, and achieved fame in its own time with audiences in the context of the adoption of a liberal constitution by Ferdinand II. Other contemporary comment praised the work as suitable for the “political education of the people”, and in contrast criticised the opera as “Teutonic” in nature. After its world premiere in 1846 at La Fenice in Venice, the opera was first produced in London at Her Majesty’s Theatre in 1848, with Sophie Cruvelli, Italo Gardoni, Velletti, Cruzzoni and in New York City in 1850. In the 20th century, it was revived in concert performance during Venice Festival of 1951 with Mancini, Penno, Giangiacomo, Guelfi, and Italo Tajo, under the conductor Carlo Maria Giulini; and at Sadler’s Wells in London in 1963 (with an English libretto), with Rae Woodland, Donald Smith, Mossfield, and Donald McIntyre, with Muir Mathieson conducting. There was a Rome revival a year later, then productions in Trieste in (1965), in Buenos Aires in (1966), in Berlin in (1971), and in 1972 Attila was performed at the Edinburgh Festival and in Florence. On 21 December 1980, the Vienna State Opera presented a new pro… More: |

Chapters: Bleeding Kansas, Yakima War, Topeka Constitution, Harmoneons, Gleason’s Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion, Mendocino War. Excerpt: Bleeding Kansas, Bloody Kansas or the Border War, was a series of violent events, involving anti-slavery Free-Staters and pro-slavery “Border Ruffian” elements, that took place in the Kansas Territory and the western frontier towns of the U.S. state of Missouri roughly between 1854 and 1858. At the heart of the conflict was the question of whether Kansas would enter the Union as a free state or slave state. As such, Bleeding Kansas was a proxy war between Northerners and Southerners over the issue of slavery in the United States. The term “Bleeding Kansas” was coined by Horace Greeley of the New York Tribune; the events it encompasses directly presaged the American Civil War. The United States had long struggled to balance the interests of slaveholders and abolitionists. The events later known as Bleeding Kansas were set into motion by the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, which nullified the Missouri Compromise and instead implemented the concept of popular sovereignty. An ostensibly democratic idea, popular sovereignty stated that the inhabitants of each territory or state should decide whether it would be a free or slave state; however, this resulted in immigration en masse to Kansas by activists from both sides. At one point, Kansas had two separate governments, each with its own constitution, although only one was federally recognized. On January 29, 1861, Kansas was admitted to the Union as a free state, less than three months before the Battle of Fort Sumter which began the Civil War. The issue of slavery, deeply embedded in the culture of the Southern United States had been divisive since the country’s formatio… More: |

It met in Washington, D.C. from March 4, 1861 to March 4, 1863, during the first two years of Abraham Lincoln’s presidency. The Democratic loss of control in the House is historically seen as somewhat surprising, since no major issue played a role in their defeat. The end of Reconstruction and the pro-business nature of the Republicans were both minor factors. The ability of the Republican Party to paint several key Democratic leaders as corrupt also helped to alter the composition of the part just enough so that |

Excerpt: The .22 Winchester Automatic (also known as the .22 Winchester Auto and occasionally .22 Win Auto ) is a .22 in (5.6mm) American rimfire rifle cartridge .Introduced for the Winchester Model 1903 semiautomatic rifle, the .22 Win Auto was never used in any other firearm. It will not chamber correctly in other .22 rimfire weapons, nor will other .22 rimfire ammunition, including the very dimensionally-similar .22 Remington Automatic , interchange with it. This feature was to prevent use of black powder rounds, which were still popular when it first appeared, from being used in the M1903, resulting in powder residue rapidly clogging the action and rendering the weapon inoperable. The power of the .22 Win Auto is comparable to the .22 Long rimfire, and while it fires a heavier bullet, it offers no performance edge on either the .22 Long or the very much more common .22 Long Rifle See also (online edition) References (URLs online) Sources A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at The Edmonton Journal is a daily newspaper in Edmonton, Alberta . Excerpt: The Latrobe Athletic Association was a professional football team located in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, from 1895 until 1909. The team is most famous for being the first team made up of professional players to play a full season of football. Also the team’s quarterback, John Brallier, became the first football player to openly turn pro, accepting $10 and expenses to play for Latrobe against the Jeannette Athletic Club. In 1895 the local Latrobe YMCA decided to organize a local football team and play a formal schedule. With the decision, Russell Aukerman, an instructor at the YMCA and a former Gettysburg College halfback, was named as a player-coach. Meanwhile, David Berry, an editor-publisher of the local newspaper, was chosen as the team’s manager. Harry Ryan was elected captain. The team began daily practice in early August. Since many of the players held jobs unrelated to football, those men working different mill shifts were accommodated with evening drills when they could not attend regular sessions in the afternoon. Their practices were held on a street-lighted vacant Pennsylvania Railroad lot at the corner of Depot and Alexandria Streets. John Brallier: The First Openly Professional Football PlayerJust before the start of the season, Latrobe quarterback Eddie Blair found himself in a scheduling conflict. Blair, who also played baseball in nearby Greensburg, discovered that the team’s first football game against Jeannette conflicted with a prior baseball commitment. Manager Berry, who was now seeking a replacement for Blair, had heard of a Indiana Normal quarterback named John Brallier. He contacted the youth at his home in Indiana, Pennsylvania, and offered him expenses to play for Latrobe. However Brallier was not particularly anxious t… More: |

Excerpt: Jewels is a ballet in three parts, choreographed by New York City Ballet co-founder and balletmaster George Balanchine in 1967. It premièred on Thursday, April 13, of the same year at the New York State Theater. The première included sets designed by Peter Harvey and lighting by Ronald Bates. Jewels has been called the first full-length abstract ballet. It can also be seen as three separate ballets, linked by their jewel-colored costumes. Balanchine commented: “The ballet had nothing to do with jewels. The dancers are just dressed like jewels.” In any case, each of the three acts features the music of a different composer : Emeralds is set to the music of Gabriel Fauré, Rubies to the music of Igor Stravinsky and Diamonds to music by Pyotr Ilyich Tschaikovsky. The costumes were created by Balanchine’s long-time collaborator Barbara Karinska who created a distinct look for each different act: romantic, calf-length tulle skirts for Emeralds, fabric that flared at the hips of both men and women |

Nicknamed the “shelltoe”, “shell shoes” or “shell tops” for its rubber shell toe piece, its iconic design is known for being one of the major influences in the sneaker culture.History When the shoe was introduced, it was the first low-top basketball shoe to feature an all-leather upper and the now famous rubber shelltoe. With its rubber toe protection and non-marking sole, the shoe caught the attention of some of the best players from the NCAA and NBA , most notably Kareem Abdul Jabbar . Within the first few years of its introduction, the Superstar was being worn by over 75 % of all NBA players; proof of its revolutionary technology which remains relevant today. Over the course of the next few years, it would advance from the court to the sidewalk and, consequently, further into the public’s consciousness. In 1983, straight out of Hollis, Queens, came Run-D.M.C. , a rap group that refused to conform to pop standards by deciding that they would dress on stage the way they dressed on the streets. The trio was most notable for wearing the Superstars without any laces and pushing the tongue of the shoe out, |

Excerpt: A Chorus Line A Chorus Line is a musical about seventeen Broadway dancers auditioning for spots on a chorus line . The book was authored by James Kirkwood, Jr. and Nicholas Dante , lyrics were written by Edward Kleban , and music was composed by Marvin Hamlisch . With nineteen main characters, it is set on the bare stage of a Broadway theatre during an audition for a musical. The show provides a glimpse into the personalities of the performers and the choreographer as they describe the events that have shaped their lives and their decisions to become dancers. The original Broadway production, directed and choreographed by Buffalo, N.Y. native Michael Bennett , was an unprecedented box office and critical hit, receiving 12 Tony Award nominations and winning nine of them, in addition to the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama . It ran for 6,137 performances, becoming the longest-running production in Broadway history up to that time. It remains the longest running Broadway musical originally produced in the United States, and the fourth longest-running Broadway show ever. The show has enjoyed many successful productions worldwide and was revived on Broadway in 2006. Synopsis At an audition for an upcoming Broadway production, the formidable director Zach and his assistant choreographer Larry put the gypsies through their paces. Every dancer is desperate for work (“I Hope I Get It”). After the first cut, 17 dancers remain. Zach tells them he is looking for a strong dancing chorus |
